Today we set off EARLY! 5am early to be exact! First task for the day – get to Walpole and collect Amy’s hat from the hostel!
Despite a near miss with a runaway kangaroo, we made it to Warpole in good time, then headed to Swarbrick Art Loop (which we missed yesterday). We figured if we were going to have to drive back this way, we would make it into a positive and do something fun there too! Now usually the sun would’ve started rising by 6.30am but of course not today!! We got to the art loop car park and had to wait 20minutes for it to get light enough to start the walk.
Eventually we had no more time to waste so headed into the forest by phone light! The art loop was cool! Essentially a forest walk with lots of sculptures of various kinds, meant to evoke a sense of wilderness in the viewer. There was a “Wall of Perception” as you entered the art loop, which was a large mirrored wall with various feathers and books with information on them – I think that was one of my favourite parts!
Aussie milestone time!! Today whilst we were in the forest I heard a wild kookaburra calling for the first time!! It was a magical feeling! I just love love love the wildlife in Australia I still can’t get over it!!
Then it was time to get going to Perth!! We needed to have the car back by 12pm and we were already running late!!
With some very dedicated driving from Amy and a quick petrol refill we got the car back with 6 minutes to spare! Anddd with the exact amount of petrol they gave us it with – not a penny more or less! 🙂
We decided to go to Freemantle for the day, a city about half an hour away from Perth by train. I did some research last night and found that above the train station they had a bag storage facility which was so handy for us as we could store our stuff for the day and go and enjoy Freemantle! 🙂
So after storing our bags we jumped on a train to Freemantle. The city was so lovely! We spent the afternoon wandering around the city centre, all the lovely boutique shops and the huge marketplace that they had! They even had plenty of street performers keeping everyone’s spirits high!
I spotted some illustrations that I had been seeing all around Perth in the market so went to look at them. The artist’a name is Wendy Binks and it turned out she was actually working in her gallery down the road today! So after purchasing a gorgeous print of a turtle that she painted, we headed to her shop. She was a nice lady and we got to see her starting to paint a new piece for her window. She takes most of her own photos of animals and then uses them when creating her paintings. So good!
Next we headed to Little Creatures Brewery for a glass of ale and a sit down. After a walk around the harbour we headed back to the station and got a CAT bus (free buses that run in the city centre) to the Freemantle Arts Centre for a look around. It was a cool gallery, the building used to be a “lunatic asylum” so the building itself was pretty interesting along with the actual art works.
We got the Cat bus back then went for dinner at an Italian restaurant again! I can never have too much Italian! I had a HUGE calzone! And a lovely glass of white…I really do need to cut down on the wine now! Ha!
Then the rain started to pour down!! We ran to the local pub for a drink where there was some lovely live music. A lovely end to the trip 🙂
We got the train back to Perth and picked up our stuff from the lockers.
I went to get train to Bassendean but there were line closures, so Craig came to pick me up. We said our goodbyes and went on our way! I have had such a great few days with Amy it’s been an awesome mini-break I can’t get over how much we have done!!
When we got back to Craig’s, I had a sample of the roast dinner his mum made – delicious as always!
Now it’s time for a glass of wine and bed!!! Being up since 4am with a full day of travelling and activities kind of takes it out of you!!
