{"id":5996,"date":"2016-07-06T11:12:09","date_gmt":"2016-07-06T10:12:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/?p=5996"},"modified":"2016-07-06T11:12:09","modified_gmt":"2016-07-06T10:12:09","slug":"89-july-parshat-korach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/services\/this-shabbat\/89-july-parshat-korach\/","title":{"rendered":"8\/9 July: Parshat Korach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-852\" src=\"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/rabbipaulsml.jpg\" alt=\"rabbipaulsml\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><em>Shabbat comes in 9.03 pm: goes out 10.20 pm\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The central tale in this parshat revolves around a rebellion or a series of rebellions led by Korach the Levite.\u00a0 At first, Korach is accompanied by 250 tribal leaders, including Datan and Aviram who complain to Moses, &#8220;You have gone too far!\u00a0 For all the community are holy, every one of them, and the Lord is in their midst.\u00a0 Why then do you raise yourselves above the Lord&#8217;s congregation?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Korach&#8217;s purpose is not a mission of holiness and is not intended to advance a nobler purpose.\u00a0 It is a challenge rooted in his own individual ambition.\u00a0 Modern commentator Nechama Leibowitz writes that Korach and his followers &#8220;were simply a band of malcontents, each harbouring his own personal grievances against authority, animated by individual pride and ambition, united to overthrow Moses and Aaron and hoping thereby to attain their individual desires.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A rebel without a cause, Korach is understood as a model of a destructive voice that challenges authority for no purpose other than his own personal advancement and wanton destructiveness. \u00a0 Challenges to authority are not bad per se in Judaism \u2014 it always depends on the motivation and intended\u00a0 goal of the people involved.<\/p>\n<p>Shabbat Shalom,<\/p>\n<p>Rabbi Paul Arberman<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0cm;
