{"id":5468,"date":"2016-06-06T09:00:22","date_gmt":"2016-06-06T08:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/?p=5468"},"modified":"2016-06-09T13:08:28","modified_gmt":"2016-06-09T12:08:28","slug":"1011-june-parshat-bamidbar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/services\/this-shabbat\/1011-june-parshat-bamidbar\/","title":{"rendered":"10\/11 June: Parshat Bamidbar (Reform &#038; HEMS)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-852\" src=\"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/rabbipaulsml.jpg\" alt=\"rabbipaulsml\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><em>Shabbat comes in 9.02 pm: goes out 10.23 pm\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&#8220;When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sacred objects and all utensils of the sacred objects at the breaking of camp, only then shall the Kehatites come and lift them, so that they do not come in contact with the sacred objects and die .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet Aaron and his sons go on and assign each of them to his duties\u2026but let not the Kehatites go inside and witness the dismantling of the sanctuary lest they die.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Several rabbinic texts explore the meaning of the phrase and examine the reason why witnessing the dismantling of the sanctuary is so lethal.<\/p>\n<p>The Talmud (Sanhedrin 81b) suggests that since the Kehatites see and handle the vessels every day, if they handled them uncovered, they might be tempted to steal them.\u00a0 Metaphorically, overfamiliarity with religion may tempt some to &#8220;steal it,&#8221; i.e., use it for ourselves or our own personal aggrandisement.\u00a0 If we do that, the rabbis teach, we make the holiness disappear.<\/p>\n<p>I think that there is a problem with overfamiliarity but it\u2019s not about stealing.\u00a0 I like that there is mystery surrounding the ancient tabernacle and Temple, and if you witness the ark, curtains, poles etc. in pieces \u2014 then it is more difficult for their \u201cmagic\u201d to work on you.<\/p>\n<p>We know that the objects of the Tabernacle, or of our own shul, have to be dismantled at times \u2014 the rabbis of old are acknowledging that it must be done\u00a0 \u2014 but they also admit that it comes at a psychological price.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Shavuot<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You probably have heard of Shavuot as the festival of weeks, counting 7 weeks from Passover Shavuot. \u00a0 We know that there is always an agricultural association with the main holidays \u2014 so too with Shavuot; it was a harvest festival. \u00a0 And you may know that Shavuot is associated with the giving of the law at Mount Sinai \u2014 we read the ten commandments at services this Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p>However, you may not have heard of Shavuot as the celebration of the anniversary of our conversion to Judaism.
