{"id":2318,"date":"2015-08-13T08:10:08","date_gmt":"2015-08-13T08:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/?p=2318"},"modified":"2015-08-13T08:10:08","modified_gmt":"2015-08-13T08:10:08","slug":"1415-aug-parsha-reeh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/services\/this-shabbat\/1415-aug-parsha-reeh\/","title":{"rendered":"14\/15 AUG: PARSHA RE&#8217;EH"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><em>Shabbat comes in at 8.11 pm; goes out at 9.16 pm<\/em><\/div>\n<div>________________________________________________________________________________<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The final section of Parasha Re\u2019eh describes the responsibility Jews had to congregate in Jerusalem on the three festivals and to give donations to the Temple: \u201ceveryone shall give as he\/she is able, according to the blessing that Adonai your God has bestowed upon you\u201d (16:17).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Although the specific topic is donations to the Temple, I often think about this quote \u201ceveryone shall give as he\/she is able\u201d in relation to tzedakah in general.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I think that one of the most challenging mitzvot to uphold is tzedakah. I always struggle with how much tzedakah to give and to whom I am required to give. The sheer amount of need in the world is overwhelming. I often feel that my dollar\/shekel\/pound won\u2019t help. I often feel that my dollar is not going to mean the difference between that person getting off the streets and staying homeless.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This sense of despair is foreseen in the preceding chapter in the Torah, where we are taught \u201cFor there will never cease to be needy people in your land, which is why I command you; open your hand to the poor and needy\u201d (15:7-8).<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The way this mitzvah is phrased acknowledges the feeling of futility that we must overcome when giving tzedakah. We must fight the voice inside ourselves that says, \u201cIf there will always be poverty, why should I try to stem it? I am powerless.
