font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12pt;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times; font-size: medium;\">Parshat Behar presents laws regulating the sabbatical year and the jubilee year.\u00a0 The people are told that for six years they are to sow their fields and prune their vineyards, but, during the seventh year, the land is to be given a complete rest, a Sabbath.\u00a0 Every fiftieth year is to be a jubilee year in which land and vineyards must not be worked and in which liberty will be granted to all Israelites enslaved during the previous forty-nine years.\u00a0 The jubilee year also marks a return of any properties, purchased during the previous forty-nine years to the original owner-families who had been given thee land at the time the Israelites entered it.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times; font-size: medium;\">The reward for obedience to these laws is the promise of security and agricultural abundance.\u00a0 There is reassurance that God will enable the people to subsist during the sabbatical year even as the land lays fallow.\u00a0 The crop in the sixth year will be so abundant that it will last beyond the seventh year.\u00a0 The aliyah concludes with the basic theory of land tenure:\u00a0 &#8220;But the land must not be sold beyond reclaim, for the land is Mine; you are but strangers resident with me.\u00a0 Throughout the land that\u00a0 you hold, you must provide for the redemption of the land.&#8221; \u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times; font-size: medium;\">In other words, the Israelites are merely God&#8217;s tenants in the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>land<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Israel.\u00a0 They do not have the right to alienate or abuse the land because the land belongs to God. \u00a0 It is a different approach to our role in the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Land<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Israel<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and even on this Earth \u2014 to be caretakers and not owners.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify; margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman'; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times; font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;
