goes out at 8.38pm<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This week\u2019s <em>Kiddush <\/em>has been designated <strong>\u201cFoodbank <em>Kiddush\u201d<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 By providing only wine &amp; challah, the funds saved will be donated to the Harrow Foodbank.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/rabbipaulsml.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-852 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/rabbipaulsml.jpg\" alt=\"rabbipaulsml\" width=\"100\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>\u201dWhen the people saw that Moses was so long coming down from the mountain, the people gathered against Aaron and said to him, Come make us a god who shall go before us, for that man Moses, who brought us from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.&#8221;\u00a0 (Exodus 32:1)<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0A mob\u00a0 \u201cgathered\u201d \u2014 in Hebrew, \u201cvayakhel\u201d \u2014 themselves to challenge Aaron to build a golden calf.\u00a0 In next week&#8217;s portion we have the same verb in a different form &#8211; vayakhel.\u00a0 &#8220;Moses gathered the whole community of Israel together and said to them\u00a0 \u2026&#8221;\u00a0 (Exodus 35:1)\u00a0 Moses first gives instructions on the laws of the Sabbath.\u00a0 He then commands them to build a tabernacle, a portable tent which they will carry through the desert.\u00a0 We have the same verb but an altogether different mood.\u00a0 This time they are gathering for a holy purpose.<\/p>\n<p>So we have two stories in the Torah, one right after the other.\u00a0 Both use the same verb in different form.\u00a0 The people gather themselves (the passive verb is used) together to build a Golden Calf, creating a false God.\u00a0 Then the people are\u00a0actively\u00a0gathered together to build a holy tabernacle, fulfilling God&#8217;s will.\u00a0 The fact that the same verb is used in both examples is no coincidence.\u00a0 Good people coming together do not necessarily ensure good results.\u00a0 The people needed the leadership of Moses to guide them to engage in worthwhile projects. \u00a0 The children of Israel had to be gathered with a sense of \u201cgood\u201d purpose and direction.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">Shabbat Shalom,<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div><strong><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">Rabbi Paul Arberman<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Shabbat comes in at 5.35pm &amp;
