Marrakech is relatively close to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>London yet culturally and geographically utterly different. Many Jews migrated to Morocco after the destruction of the second temple and also when expelled from Spain during the inquisition.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>There have been long periods of peace and tolerance and Sultan Mohammed V refused to implement Nazi demands for persecution. Today, the Jewish population of Marrakech is very small and primarily elderly with large numbers having emigrated to France or Israel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Thursday, 15<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b><sup>th<\/sup><\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b> April:<\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Mid-afternoon departure on BA flight 2666 leaving Heathrow T5 at 2.45PM and arriving in Marrakech at 6.25PM. After arriving at our lodgings, the Riad Dar Nimbus, we\u2019ll have dinner and relax. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-677\" src=\"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/marakesh2.jpg\" alt=\"marakesh2\" width=\"200\" height=\"128\" \/>Friday, 16<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b><sup>th<\/sup><\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b> April<\/b>: After breakfast, we\u2019ll go to the Mellah, once the Jewish<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>quarter, to visit the Lazama Synagogue which is built on the site of a structure dating to 1492. We\u2019ll also visit the nearby Jewish cemetery, spice markets, Place Des Ferblantiers, Bahia Palace and the exquisite Saadian Tombs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>After returning to our Riad for a brief rest, we\u2019ll celebrate Erev Shabbat and go out for dinner.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-678\" src=\"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/marakesh3.jpg\" alt=\"marakesh3\" width=\"200\" height=\"128\" \/>Saturday, 17<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b><sup>th <\/sup><\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b>April: <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/b>Free time to visit Marrakech\u2019s sprawling and maze-like souks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you can cope with strong smells, a visit to the tanneries and leather goods shops is worthwhile. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Otherwise, shops abound for sweets, herbs, spices, carpets, baskets, jewelry, perfume, clothing, metalwork plus fruit and vegetables. Near the Jemaa El Fnaa Square, there are numerous outdoor restaurants and, off of a side street, superb ice cream sundaes are to be found in an old fashioned French-style cafe.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We\u2019ll meet up for dinner.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>(If you desire a massage or other spa treatment, this can be booked at our Riad.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Sunday, 18<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b><sup>th<\/sup><\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b> April<\/b>: After breakfast, we\u2019ll travel by mini-bus<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>for about an hour to the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains and visit the \u00c9comus\u00e9e Berb\u00e8re , located in the village of Tafza and overlooking the Ourika Valley. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>After taking tea at the museum, we\u2019ll visit a nearby Jewish cemetery and the pilgrimage site where the saintly Rabbi Salomon Bel Hensh was buried five centuries ago. We\u2019ll travel a bit further along the Ourika River and have lunch before heading back to Marrakech.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Monday, 20<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s2\"><b><sup>th<\/sup><\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"><b> April<\/b>:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>After breakfast, we will go for a long visit to the extraordinary Majorelle Gardens<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>where we will take refuge among the exotic plants, Moorish architecture painted in brilliant colours.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There is a small but outstanding Berber Museum<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>devoted to the diverse influences on Moroccan culture, including Jewish contributions.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We will have lunch at the excellent Caf\u00e9 Bousafsaf on site.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Plenty of opportunity for photography or sketching and painting.
