{"id":1316,"date":"2015-01-23T17:48:23","date_gmt":"2015-01-23T17:48:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/?page_id=1316"},"modified":"2016-05-03T14:09:55","modified_gmt":"2016-05-03T13:09:55","slug":"mosaic-walks","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/whats-on\/mosaic-walks\/","title":{"rendered":"Mosaic Walks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/London-Walk.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1381 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/London-Walk-300x300.png\" alt=\"London Walk\" width=\"230\" height=\"230\" \/><\/a>Mosaic's walking groups regularly gets together to explore some of London's better, and lesser, known areas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of our recent walks was a\u00a0<strong>Mosaic Walk in Literary London<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/mosaic-walk-20mar.1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4492\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4492 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/mosaic-walk-20mar.1-208x300.jpg\" alt=\"mosaic walk 20mar.1\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/mosaic-walk-20mar.1-208x300.jpg 208w, https:\/\/hayleyroosphotography.co.uk\/mosaic\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/mosaic-walk-20mar.1.jpg 415w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 208px) 100vw, 208px\" \/><\/a>Samuel Johnson wrote: \u201cIf you wish to have a just notion of the magnitude of this great city, you must not be satisfied with seeing its great streets and squares, but must survey its innumerable little lanes and courts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a chilly afternoon in March when six Mosaic walkers set off on the first walk of 2016. It was inevitable that our route from Holborn to Chancery Lane would once again follow in the footsteps of Charles Dickens and some of his literary creations.<\/p>\n<p>Our first stop was 58 Lincoln Inns Fields, referred to in Bleak House. Passing Lincoln\u2019s Inn and the chapel where John Donne was inaugurated, we walked through Carey Street and onto Fleet Street before turning into Johnson Square and 17 Gough Square, the only surviving residence of Dr Samuel Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>A short diversion from Gunpowder Square, and we arrived at Ye Old Cheshire Cheese, believed to be the model for the tavern where Sydney Carton and Charles Darnay \u2018enjoy a good plain dinner and good wine\u2019, as described in A Tale of Two Cities. Retracing our steps to Gunpowder Square, we eventually turned into High Holborn and the redbrick building on the site of Furnival\u2019s Inn, where John Westlock had chambers in Martin Chuzzlewit.<\/p>\n<p>Turning into Furnival Street, we reached Took\u2019s Court, the Cook\u2019s Court, where \u2018Mr Snagsby, Law Stationer, pursues his lawful calling\u2019 in Bleak House. The walk will include literary quotes, and conclude with lunch (optional). Numbers are limited for this walk, so please contact the office\u00a0for further information as soon as possible.
