In the Immediate Aftermath of the Brexit-Referendum, Mosaic Works to Strengthen Local Interfaith Relations and Reach Out to Vulnerable Communities.
We are well aware that that the election result was about much more than merely our political and economic affiliation with the European Union. It was also an expression of entrenched educational, social class and religious divisions. Negative emotions like fear, anxiety, envy, resentment and hatred were whipped up by bitter ‘dog-whistlers’ and the tabloid media.
The referendum result is potentially a threat to the liberal humanitarian values that many of us Londoners do share: inclusivity, diversity, neighbourliness extended to everyone and respecting the stranger as an equal human being. As Jews, these positive ethical values are central to our hopes for a positive future.
On Friday evening 24th June, Rabbi Frank Dabba Smith and Borough of Brent Police Commander Mick Gallagher joined an Iftar meal at the end of that day’s Ramadan fast at the Wembley Central Mosque. Their messages of solidarity and reassurance were warmly applauded. In the face of reports of increased levels of hate-crime, we shall continue to emphasize our close interfaith ties based on values of community cohesion, mutual support, kindness, compassion and hope.
